How to Download Blackboard Discussion Forums
into Microsoft Excel with ForumManager 2.xx
 
To download a Blackboard discussion forum into Microsoft Excel with ForumManager, you will need to complete three main steps: 1) download the forum message index into a .txt file;  2) download the message texts into a separate .txt file, and 3) run ForumManager to import the contents of the .txt files into Excel. Below are detailed instructions on how to complete this process. Please read and follow the instructions carefully.

Download Forum Index

  1. Go to your Blackboard discussion forums using Internet Explorer (not Netscape) on a PC (not Macintosh).
  2. Right mouse click on the link to the discussion forum and select "Open to new window".
  3. Wait to make sure the entire forum is loaded to your new browser window.
  4. Under the ViewMenu, select "Source" and the html code should appear in a text editor window (most likely in Notepad).
  5. In the text editor, save the code on your computer in a .txt file (you must save it as a .txt file, e.g. forumindex.txt)
  6. Close the text editor application.
Download Forum Message Texts
  1. Return to the discussion forum in your web browser.
  2. To view all the message texts, you will need to have access to the toolbar in the discussion forum. If they are not already available, click on the little red triangle resting at top of the message index.
  3. Click on the button "Select All" to select all the messages listed in the forum index.
  4. Then click on the button "Collect".
  5. Wait to make sure all the messages are downloaded to the webpage.
  6. Under the ViewMenu, select "Source" and the html code should appear in a text editor window.
  7. In the text editor, save the code on your computer in a .txt file (you must save it as a .txt, e.g. forummessages.txt)
  8. Close the text editor application.
Import the Discussions into Excel using ForumManager
  1. Download and open ForumManager (283k)
  2. If you cannot open the ForumManager program, you will need to set the macro security levels to low or medium level. Start by booting up Microsoft Excel. Under the Tools Menu, select Macro and then select Security. Then set the macro security to Low or Medium.
  3. Open the ForumManager program.
  4. Go to the excel sheet titled "ScoreSheets" by clicking on the tabs displayed along the bottom of the Excel window.
  5. Click on the button "Download Forum" at the top right corner of the sheet.
  6. Enter a name of the worksheet to which you want to save the discussion forum.
  7. Select the text file containing the forum index to import the index into ForumManager.
  8. Select the text file containing the message texts to import them into ForumManager.
  9. Once successfully downloaded, you will see the message index in Excel. Scrolls down below the message index to view the texts of each message listed in the index. The texts ore sorted and displayed in the order in which the messages are listed in the index.
Reading & Navigating the Messages in ForumManager
  1. To read the messages in the new worksheet, click on any of the message titles.
  2. Type CTRL-j to jump from the selected message in the index to read the full text of the selected message.
  3. Type CTRL-j to return back to the message listed in the index.
  4. Type CTRL-k to move to the next message in the index or in the message text.
  5. Type CTRL-h to move to the previous message in the index or in the message text.
  6. Type CTRL-n to move to the next discussion thread in the index or in the message text.
  7. Type CTRL-u to move to the previous discussion thread in the index or in the message text.
